...FOR SNOW - JANUARY IS NUMBER ONE...

IF THE SEATTLE AREA IS GOING TO HAVE SNOW ON THE GROUND SOMETIME
DURING THE YEAR...JANUARY IS THE MONTH. SINCE 1948...JANUARY HAS THE
GREATEST NUMBER OF DAYS WITH SNOW ON THE GROUND. LOOKING AT SPECIFIC
DATES...THE 2ND...8TH...10TH...18TH AND 23RD HAVE HAD SNOW ON THE
GROUND SEVEN TIMES. TWELVE OTHER JANUARY DATES HAVE HAD SNOW SIX
TIMES.

JANUARY ALSO TENDS TO BE OUR COLDEST MONTH OF THE YEAR. SO IT MAKES
SENSE THAT JANUARY WOULD HAVE THE GREATEST NUMBER OF DAYS WITH SNOW
ON THE GROUND AS WELL.

THERE HAVE BEEN SOME SNOWY JANUARYS. FOR INSTANCE JANUARY 1950 WAS
ONE OF THE COLDEST AND SNOWIEST ON RECORD. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE
FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH WAS ONLY 24.6 DEGREES...OVER 16 DEGREES BELOW
AVERAGE...AND 57.2 INCHES OF SNOW FELL THAT MONTH. THE ALL-TIME
RECORD LOW TEMPERATURE IN SEATTLE STILL STANDS TODAY - ZERO SET ON
JANUARY 31ST 1950.

ANOTHER SNOWY JANUARY WAS IN 1969 WITH 45.4 INCHES OF SNOW THAT FELL
DURING THE MONTH. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE THAT JANUARY WAS 33.1
DEGREES. THERE ARE OTHER JANUARYS WITH HEALTHY SNOWFALL. 1954 HAD
20.0 INCHES...1972 HAD 14.0 INCHES...1980 HAD 8.8 INCHES WHILE 2012
HAD 9.6 INCHES INCLUDING SOME FREEZING RAIN AS WELL.

THE LOWLANDS OF WESTERN WASHINGTON HAVE ALREADY HAD A TASTE OF COLD
WEATHER THIS WINTER AND A BIT OF SNOW IN DECEMBER. IS THERE ANY SNOW
IN STORE LATER THIS MONTH OR WINTER? RAIN IS BACK IN THE FORECAST
FOR THE REST OF THIS WEEK BUT NO SNOW. THE OUTLOOK FOR THE REST OF
THIS MONTH AND FEBRUARY HAS EVEN ODDS ON ABOVE OR BELOW AVERAGE
TEMPERATURES AND PRECIPITATION.

THE MOUNTAIN SNOWPACK IS WELL BEHIND AVERAGE AT THIS POINT THOUGH
SOME SNOW IS EXPECTED THROUGH THIS WEEKEND. YET THERE IS A LOT OF
WINTER TO COME. SO KEEP AN EYE ON THE WEATHER FORECAST AT
WWW.WEATHER.GOV/SEATTLE/ AND BE PREPARED FOR SNOW WHETHER IN THE
MOUNTAINS OR IN THE LOWLANDS OF WESTERN WASHINGTON.

Winter Storm Watch
URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SEATTLE WA
323 PM PST WED DEC 18 2013

.OVERVIEW...A MOIST WARM FRONT WILL SPREAD PRECIPITATION OVER
WESTERN WASHINGTON LATE THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY. THE
PRECIPITATION WILL FALL INTO A COOL DRY AIR MASS...WHICH WILL
RESULT IN SNOW OVER THE LOWLANDS. WARMER AIR WITH THE WARM FRONT
WILL EVENTUALLY CHANGE THE SNOW OVER TO RAIN BY LATE FRIDAY
MORNING. THERE IS STILL QUITE A BIT OF UNCERTAINTY REGARDING HOW
THIS EVENT WILL UNFOLD...PARTICULARLY WITH HOW MUCH SNOW WILL FALL
IN WHICH AREAS. IF WARM SOUTH WINDS ARE MORE EFFECTIVE THAN
EXPECTED THEN SNOW AMOUNTS WILL BE LESS.

EE-3 Antenna Bulk Buy:

Attn: ARES member – MCARC members – Belfair Club Members

I received the two attached e mails from ARES leadership. The first attachment is the offer and related email correspondence. This is a QST article on the antenna. Although the offer to purchase the antenna says ARES members any one can take advantage. Use the link in the reply to section of Lynn’s email to order. Let me know if you order one ( I have) I will pick them up in Seattle and hand them out at the club meetings. You must place your orders with in the next week to take advantage of this offer.

Dave/AC7YX

Several years ago I coordinated a bulk buy of EE-3 antennas for the Red Cross.  See the attached QST review.
These are excellent antennas for EmComm use:
–  They cover three bands – 144/220 & 440 MHz
–  They fold down to shirt pocket size
–  They take about a minute to assemble and disassemble
–  The cost is VERY reasonable
–  THEY WORK!!!  All you need to do is add feedline and a radio.
I contacted the manufacturer this morning, and he is gearing up for a production run.  He has to order large quantities of components to keep the cost down, so he only goes into production every two or three years. The costs are not final, but it looks like we can obtain them at a cost of under $25 each if a sizable bulk order is made.
I am willing to front the money to get the order going, but need a showing of interest.  Once the price is finalized I would need advance payment and you could expect delivery within six weeks.  If you belong to another emcomm group please pass this information along and attempt to set up a bulk buy for  your group.  If you do this I would need one person to deal with for the group.
These antennas would be available ONLY for pickup at the Red Cross chapter in Seattle – I will NOT ship them.

News: Our Repeater Antenna has been replaced and appears (hears?) to be working fine. Too cool! Our thanks to everyone that showed up and Special thanks to Omer (AD7DY) & Dave (KC7USS) for climbing the water tower, braving breeze and heights, and doing an excellent job! You can see the pictures Stan (KF7LTT) took here and watch the (crappy!) video he took with his AR Drone.

If anyone else has additional pictures or video (of this event), send them to me so I can post them.
